In this post, the FOURTH in a series centered around DAC participant RICHARD B. COE, we are featuring a painting from the DAC Foundation Collection titled Devin Yacht Club. Located in Amagansett, New York, on the eastern end of Long Island, the Devon Yacht Club is still in operation. The club was founded in 1908 as the Gardiner's Bay Boat Club.

For the last 25 years of his life, Coe lived in Goldens Bridge, NY, a small town located north of New York City, near Danbury, CT. After retiring from McCall's magazine, Coe spent his time painting and teaching art at several schools and his home.

Coe passed away on December 13, 1978, in Goldens Bridge, NY, at the age of 73. He was laid to rest in Live Oak Cemetary in his home town of Selma, AL. His obituary lists his only survivors as his wife Anne Hunt Coe and one niece, Margaret Ellen Coe Cairnes.

In 2018, a large collection of Richard Coe's etchings were featured at the Birmingham Museum of Art along with some of Coe's paintings. The BMA exhibition titled Magic City Realism was part of the state-wide celebration of Alabama’s bicentennial, ALABAMA 200. Follow this link for more information about the Magic City Realism.
