Goldthwaite Etching Added to Collection

ANNE with MAJOR and MINI, Anne W.  Goldthwaite, drypoint etching, 10"x8", 1918.

This self-portrait was recently added to the Dixie Art Colony Collection. Goldthwaite studied etching with Charles Mielatz at the National Academy of Design in New York City.

Goldthwaite, a Montgomery, AL native, is known to have attended the Dixie Art Colony in 1934, 1940 and 1941 as a guest instructor. A chance meeting in Paris with writer Gertrude Stein, one of the most influential pre-war and avant-garde persons of the time, provided her with an opportunity to join the art circle of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Goldthwaite later said, "Fate gave me several years in Paris at the most exciting time: during the great reconstruction from art to modern art."
