“LUNCH & LEARN” Dixie Art Colony A New Generation: Steve Garst

Join us on July 21, 2022, as we relaunch our public "Lunch & Learn" program series. This program will feature River Region artist Steve Garst. In October 2020, Mark Harris, founder, and director of the DAC Foundation, commissioned Garst to paint a large canvas based on one of the Foundation's most iconic photographs. At this program, we will discuss the DAC Foundation: A New Generation project and unveil the finished product. Garst, an active member of our "Dixie Art Colony: A New Generation" project, will discuss the process and challenges involved in producing the commission. According to Garst, this project ranks in the top five most challenging paintings he has completed in his career. "I've always said I enjoy a good challenge, and I got one. Thank you to Mark for including me in this project. I received a lot of enjoyment from this project, and I appreciate his confidence and patience," said Garst.

Garst is a 1969 graduate of Wetumpka High School that later graduated with honors from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. One of the factors in selecting Garst for this task was his 37-year career as a Professional Illustrator, serving 20 years as Senior Illustrator and Art Director in the publishing industry.

Garst is an award-winning artist and a Bronze Signature member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama, Georgia Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. Interestingly, beginning in 1939, the Watercolor Society of Alabama was closely linked to the Dixie Art Colony through the 1940s.

The optional lunch will be served at 11:00 am followed by our program. The program will begin at 11:45 and will include an introduction about our "Dixie Art Colony: A New Generation" project followed by a presentation by artist Steve Garst. The program will conclude at approximately 1:00 pm.  We will meet in Trinity Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church, located directly across the street from Winn Dixie and McDonald’s at 5375 US Highway 231, Wetumpka, Alabama.
