Loulie R. Anderson | 1887-1965

Director of the Art Department at Synodical College

Loulie Anderson was born March 14, 1887, in Brownsville, Tennessee. She moved from Mississippi where she worked as the director of the art department at Synodical College, to Tampa, Florida. Anderson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago; with Wagner, Innes and Ringling School of Art, with Fred Yost. Anderson was an early and enthusiastic member of Tampa’s Students’ Art Club. She was a charter member of the Tampa Art Institute and later president. In March 1928 she represented the Institute as a delegate to the 1st Annual Convention and Exhibition of the Florida Federation of Art in Gainesville. Anderson taught art in Tampa for many years and was listed in Who’s Who in American Art, 1953. In 1958 she accepted a teaching position at Thornwell School in Clinton, South Carolina. She attended the Dixie Art Colony in 1944 and 1945. Anderson passed away on August 30, 1965 in Bradenton, Florida. Sources: DAC Foundation Archives, Newspapers.com, Ancestry.com
